Week 3, lesson 2 Phoneme "ch" and Grapheme "ch" - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In Week 3, Day 2 of the phonics phase 3 lesson plan, children are introduced to the phoneme /ch/ and the corresponding grapheme
The teaching component involves telling a story about a character named 'Chick on a Stick' who enjoys chatting with friends. The story is crafted to highlight the /ch/ sound, helping to embed the phoneme in the children's minds. An accompanying action, miming a bird's beak with their hand and saying /ch/ /ch/ /ch/, reinforces the sound. In the practice phase, children learn how to form the digraph by finger writing in the air or on a friend's back. The 'Sound Jump' game is then played, where children listen for the /ch/ sound in various words and jump when they hear it. To apply their new knowledge, students engage in 'Phrase Draw', where they decode a phrase and illustrate it on their whiteboards. The lesson also includes extension activities like sorting and drawing to further consolidate learning of the /ch/ phoneme and grapheme.
